The Twitter accounts of some of the U.S.’s most prominent political and business leaders, from Barack Obama and Joe Biden to Bill Gates and Warren Buffett, were hacked Wednesday afternoon in an apparent effort to promote a Bitcoin scam. The attacks were stunning in scope and almost certainly coordinated. Others whose Twitter accounts appeared to be hacked included Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, Kanye West, Uber Technologies Inc.,
Apple Inc. and Michael Bloomberg, the founder and majority owner of Bloomberg News parent Bloomberg LP. The accounts sent out tweets promising to double the money of anyone sending funds via Bitcoin within 30 minutes.
Twitter said it is aware of the security incident impacting its accounts and is investigating.
As the hack was unfolding, verified Twitter accounts suddenly lost the ability to post new tweets. “You may be unable to Tweet or reset your password while we review and address this incident,” Twitter wrote on its support account. The company’s shares declined more than 3% in extended trading.
So far, the Bitcoin address tweeted by the hackers has been sent over 12 Bitcoins, worth more than $110,000. It appeared that popular Bitcoin exchange Coinbase has blocked its users from sending money to the address.
Some of the Twitter accounts that were targeted said they used two-factor authentication and strong passwords. The tweets indicate they were posted using Twitter’s web application.
According to TrendsMap.com, the phrase “I am giving back to my community due to COVID-19” has been tweeted 3,330 times in the past four hours. A heat map shows activity centered in Houston but scattered across the globe, including tweets originating from IP addresses in New York, London, Spain, Italy, Jakarta and Tokyo.
Twitter has previously endured high-profile hacks, including one of Chief Executive Officer Jack Dorsey that was administered through a SIM swap — meaning a user found a way to mimic the phone number of the account and tweet via text message. Following the string of incidents, Twitter closed the loophole by suspending the ability to tweet via text. The official Twitter accounts of more than a dozen NFL teams were hacked earlier this year, just ahead of the Super Bowl.

The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has told suspended acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, that he’s not responsible for his detention. Magu was arrested on Monday, July 6, 2020 to answer questions before a Presidential Panel about his stewardship of the anti-graft agency. He has been detained ever since at the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Abuja, while his questioning continues. Magu, through his counsel, wrote the IGP last week to grant him bail based on self-recognisance. However, in a reply, Adamu told Magu’s counsel he’s not being held by the Police, but by the Presidential Panel. He told Magu to redirect his bail request to the chairman of the panel for appropriate action, in the letter dated July 14, 2020. Magu, a Commissioner of Police, has denied all allegations against him, and expressed his sadness at being treated like a “common criminal”. He faces accusations of misappropriations of funds, and the illegal disposal of assets recovered from corruption cases. Magu has been the EFCC’s acting chairman since 2015, with his appointment rejected twice by the Senate due to a damaging report written by the Department of State Services (DSS). The DSS report had accused him of sabotage, unauthorised removal of EFCC files, and acts unbecoming of a police officer.
Abena Yeboah was arrested in the Bronx by New York Police Officers after Hackensack Police in New Jersey issued a warrant for her. She was taken into custody and is now awaiting an extradition hearing
A 14 year old secondary school girl, Anita Haledu Ibrahim, has allegedly committed suicide in Angwan Dorowa, Gbuja village, Andaha, Nasarawa state.
According to reports, the deceased, an SS1 student of Government Science School, Andaha, drank some amount of herbicide on Saturday, 11th July, 2020 and was rushed to a hospital where she died this morning.

A man has been arrested for allegedly raping a 13-year-old girl after taking shelter in her mom’s shop on a rainy day. Abdul Abdul, 39, was arrested by the Police in Jos, Plateau State.
Abdul, a married father-of-six who lives in Bukuru, Jos South Local Government Area, allegedly committed the crime on June 8, when he went into the girl’s mother’s shop to buy water.
Speaking to newsmen on Monday, July 13, Abdul claimed what he had with the girl was “sex” not rape. He said he took shelter in the girl’s mum’s shop after buying 20 Naira sachet water following a break from the building project he was involved in in the house opposite the shop.
He claims that he remained in the shop, discussing with the girl after buying the water. He said he touched her shoulder and she didn’t resist so he went further. He added that she pulled down her trousers herself and encouraged him to ejaculate in her.
He said he ejaculated on her thighs instead and when he was done, she ran out screaming for help, thereby drawing the attention of neighbours.
He added that the girl is someone he knows well as they live on the same street. He also said the act was consensual.
